In the pre-dawn hours of February 29, 1704, a force of about 300 First Nations Natives and French allies launched a daring raid on the English settlement of Deerfield, Massachusetts, situated in the Pocumtuck homeland. 112 Deerfield men, women and children were captured along with a bell that was a gift of the French government to the Kanienkehaka missionary church in Kahnawake. The captive were taken on a 300 mile forced march to Canada in harsh winter conditions. Captives were allowed to leave shortly after, but many were adopted by the Iroquois companions. The village of Kahnawake, Quebec in Canada possess families with direct lineage to these partnerships to this day.
