Before lighting, a firm dense cigar. A pungent dark smell when held up to the nose. Slightly oily, veiny wrapper gently threatens me to light it up as a challenge.
Before lighting, some cold puffs reveal a chewing tobacco flavour with molasses and mushroom hints.
I take the flame to the stick, and it lights slowly. The densely compacted leaves battle with my lighter, but eventually succumb to the heat.
1st third: the battle continues, to stay properly lit. I finally win the battle, and the true smoking experience begins. All the flavour is in the front of the palate. Oak tree bark mixed with burnt nutmeg. No flavour on the exhale, but this is an acceptable compromise due to the firm draw, and the thick smoke billowing from my mouth.
Nearing the end of the 1st third, the lack of flavour continues. Maybe it’s the tight build, maybe it’s the red ale that I am drinking alongside this smoke, but I am surprised/disappointed by the lack of flavour.
2nd third: the tight draw refuses to yield, and I puff continuously to keep the cigar lit. Flavour wise, it has lost any uniqueness that it may have had at the beginning. Not terrible, but it tastes like tobacco.
Coming to the final third, the taste has not improved. The tight build has not let up, leading to a hot smoke that feels like more if a mouthful than it should.
Final third, I truly wanted this stick to come through at the end, but no dice. The end of the cigar was anticlimactic, offering no surprise flavour or insight into the makers intention.
I appreciate the hard work that went in to the production of this cigar, but it was a failure.
