Alberto and Alejandro Turrent, owners of Nueva Matacapan de Tabacos S.A. de C.V, are the first family of Mexico’s cigar industry. The father-son team not only makes some of Mexico’s best cigars but are also the largest grower of cigar tobacco in the country. The San Andres Maduro leaf they grow outside of Veracruz is world renowned for its quality, and a variety of their tobaccos are important components in many of America’s most popular premium cigar brands.
To keep the consistency of their flagship Casa Turrent line, Alejandro decided a large factory was not the best place to make the more complex Casa series. In June, Alejandro took his great-grandfather’s house and renovated it to make a boutique factory with 15 people to produce the Casa Turrent series.

– Flavours of pepper and rich soil are present throughout the entire smoke, 2nd third is quite harsh, but seems to even out on the last third of the stick.
– I had to cut quite high to get a good enough draw
– I’d give 4 stars, but the draw issue is a big pet peeve of mine, and this stick struck mine unfortunately, due to having to turn my Torpedo into a Robusto.

Best to dry box the cigar 2 days before smoking and it will smoke incredibly and billow out thick chewy smoke

First Third
The cigar started with leather, toasted nuts and tobacco, with some earth and wood underneath. The retrohale brought a noticeable amount of pepper. There wasn’t much sweetness or creaminess coming through, and I wasn’t really getting the chocolate or cocoa character I was hoping for.
Second Third
The profile moved further toward wood, earth and spice, with the pepper continuing to show itself. The leather stayed noticeable throughout. There was definitely flavor, but nothing really stood out as particularly enjoyable to me.
Final Third
The cigar got darker as it progressed. The wood took on more of a charred, almost herbal character, while there were hints of cocoa and coffee underneath the leather, earth and spice. The pepper also picked up toward the end.
Construction
The cigar was generally well made and smoked reasonably well, but the flavor profile was the bigger issue for me. There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with the construction; it just didn’t give me the flavors I look for in a cigar.
Overall
The biggest takeaway for me was that the cigar felt bland. It wasn’t necessarily a bad cigar, and I wouldn’t say it was poorly made — it just wasn’t a profile I particularly enjoyed. I tend to gravitate toward chocolate and cocoa, creaminess, nuts, sweetness and interesting aromatics. This one leaned much more heavily toward leather, earth, pepper and charred wood, which left me wanting more.
