I totally agree with Vincent Richardson, it’s nothing to write home about ! It’s mild, it burns well, no bite on the tongue with no aroma or flavor that stands out. I mixed it with a little bit of the Captain’s Cherry tobacco to give it a little more “personality”. It’s a good tobacco to use as a filler to combine with an other stronger tasting one like Captain Black Dark or Cherry.

I agree with the other reviews… Capt Black Original is ok to good pending my mood. It was 1 of my 1st tobaccos 45 years ago… still gets into rotation for nostalgia

I have been smoking Captain Black tobacco for over 20 years. In recent years, the quality has become very inconsistent—one batch is acceptable, the next has almost no aroma or flavor. Over the past three months, it has changed even more and feels stale, with weaker taste and smell every time I order. Each new purchase seems worse than the previous one, yet the price keeps increasing. In Canada, it is more expensive and lower in quality than anywhere else. The same tobacco I used to buy from the U.S. was about one-fifth the price and far better in quality. I don’t know what policy is behind this, but the quality keeps declining while the price keeps rising.

Totally disagree with some of the reviews that ho-hum this blend. I find it gentle and pleasing to the senses. Tried the other Captain Black blends and this is my favorite

I am writing as a long-time customer of Captain Black pipe tobacco, with over 30 years of experience using this product.
Over the past 2–3 years, I have noticed a significant and consistent decline in quality across multiple purchases and batches.
The tobacco no longer behaves like a natural pipe tobacco. It has an unnatural, gummy or “artificial” texture, does not burn properly, and often goes out repeatedly. In many cases, I end up discarding a large portion of the bowl because it simply will not stay lit or burn evenly.
The smoke quality has also changed. Instead of a smooth and pleasant experience, it now feels heavy and irritating. It produces noticeable throat and chest discomfort and causes mucus buildup, which never happened in the past when I used the same product regularly.
Additionally, the flavor has deteriorated significantly. It feels overly processed and lacks the natural tobacco character I used to associate with Captain Black. Each new pouch seems worse than the previous one, regardless of variety or batch.
Even the packaging has changed over time, including the removal of the outer plastic wrap and differences in paper quality and appearance, which adds to the impression that the product has undergone major formulation and processing changes.
As a result, my consumption has dropped dramatically, as the product is no longer enjoyable or consistent. This is disappointing after decades of loyalty, especially when long-time customers are now forced to discard a large portion of the product and experience negative effects on comfort and enjoyment.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously, as many long-term users appear to be experiencing similar issues.
